Bartosz Feński: VeriSign hacked

I wonder how many breaches never see the light of day. Quite late but at least confirmed, VeriSign was hacked and they don t even know what was the impact of this attack. Comodo, DigiNotar, Verisign did I forget some company which CA/SSL infrastructure has been compromised?

Bartosz Feński: First thing to do after fresh installation

It s only me that is being annoyed by downloading all recommended packages?
How many of you have such file?
someserver:~# cat /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/02recommends

Bartosz Feński: Wheezy installation

Well I thought it s going to be more user friendly and flawless. I ve just tried to install Wheezy on my Asus UX31e. It was possible, but no without some glitches. First of all this is screen with question what software I would like to use. Well I chose only the latest option. Guess why.
I m not sure if it is problem with i10n of Polish installer or some more general problem. Sorry for pasting pictures from Facebook, but that was the easier way to share it using my mobile. Second thing this time related to i18n is Grub screen after installation. Here it goes.
I had no idea that Grub is ready for i18n is it at all? Third thing. Installer was able to setup WPA-PSK wifi during installation and that was cool. But if it was able to do it during installation then why there s no wpa_supplicant configuration after first reboot?
I had to setup it manually to be able to download more software. Fourth thing. Where is the magic behind encrypted LVM? I chose that option and now kernel asks me to enter password to be able to mount rootfs but after booting none of LVM utils tell me that I ve got LVM. Of course I m going to read about it and to fill bugs about found problems, but I really thought installer is going to be more friendly.

Bartosz Feński: This is why I don t want any crappy PayPass/payWave.

Hacker s demo shows how easily credit cards can be read through clothes and wallets.

Bartosz Feński: Unfortunately sudden shutdowns not solved

Doh.. I thought it s end of problems.
Seems ACPI stuff only reduced unexpected shutdowns but didn t eliminate them. Crap :/

Bartosz Feński: Back to Debian

Since all problems related to Zenbook (Asus UX31e) under Linux can be solved without using the bleeding edge kernel and rest of the stuff, I m going to end my short adventure with ArchLinux. Basically I have nothing against ArchLinux. Seems to be quite good choice for someone more experienced, but assuming I m able to use new laptop under Debian then learning new options of pacman or yaourt is useless for me. Even such short adventure with ArchLinux ended up with my own PKGBUILDs for this distro ;) Anyway. Goodbye Arch, welcome Debian unstable. Tomorrow I m going to reinstall to Debian. This time Windows 7 will be removed too.

Bartosz Feński: Possible solution to sudden shutdowns of Zenbook under Linux

Some guy on Ubuntu forum described a solution to fix sudden shutdowns on Asus UX31e with enabled RC6 under Linux.
Seems that the problem is in Differentiated System Description Table (part of ACPI). I wonder if step zero from that manual wouldn t be enough to fix it. Anyway I hope I ll finally be able to work on *stable* system ;)

Bartosz Feński: dibbler 0.8.1

Can t believe its almost 7 years since my first sponsored upload of Dibbler to Debian archive. I did it cause upstream promised to maintain it and fix any bugs submitted by Debian users. Unfortunately after 3-4 years he stopped to do it. Well since I was the sponsor of it, then I should feel responsible for these packages after him. It s quite hard to do it, cause I m not using these packages at all ;) Anyway, I finally found some time and reviewed them. It wasn t easy cause in the meantime whole build process totally changed. To whom it may concern: Dibbler is an IPv6 DHCP client, relay and server. I ve just uploaded the newest upstream version. Changelog follows: dibbler (0.8.1-1) unstable; urgency=low * ACK previous NMUes thanks!
* New upstream version (Closes: #629685)
uses correct example adsress pool in examples (Closes: #544323)
corrects scope of stateless in manpage (Closes: #615165)
* Fix pending l10n issues. Debconf translations:
Danish courtesy of Joe Hansen (Closes: #597767)
Dutch courtesy of Jeroen Schot (Closes: #632628)
* Fixes handling of children processes using resolvconf (Closes: #627317)
* Doesn t conflict with other resolver configuration daemons (Closes: #627786)
* Correctly handles multiselect values from debconf (Closes: #629681)
* Debianized almost from scratch, uses new source format.
* New Standards-Version (no changes needed). Bartosz Fenski <fenio> Fri, 27 Jan 2012 14:37:13 +0100 Yep, it fixes 8 bugs, and brings the newest upstream version with huge number of new features to Debian. Enjoy!

Bartosz Feński: Sentelic touchpad

With the latest changes in driver for Sentelic touchpad I m eventually able to use two-finger scrolling, and disable touchpad while typing. Middle-button emulation and on pad click & drag doesn t work yet, though. Edge scrolling either. Anyway it starts to be really usable and there is some progress to merge this driver with mainline kernel. I believe last time I was compiling kernel was around 2.4.18 and only because at that time I was maintaining router for some network and needed some special iptables extensions. Happily it hasn t changed too much since then and I can compile 3.2.1 without problem ;)

Bartosz Feński: Cracow against ACTA

Wow that s really big demonstration.
I ve just uploaded video with people walking near Wawel castle plenty of people during almost 20 minutes.
I suppose there was more than 50k people and wonder what s going to be shown in TV ;) I really like it.

Bartosz Feński: Unlock your X without password

Yep it s pretty simple. Just press CTRL+ALT+* (from numerical keyboard). Peter Hutterer, an X.org developer, posted an interesting article about this. And the link to the original blog entry about it.

Bartosz Feński: Update your packages

I thought it s going to be an easy task. lintian told me it s not so easy I have to review all my packages, bump their stadards policy, comply with DEP-5, use new quilt format and so on That s not an easy task with more than twenty packages. Yeah I know it s not requirenment, but still want to do that.

Bartosz Feński: Brute force attack against Wifi Protected Setup

Probably most of you already heard about weakness in Wifi Protected Setup discovered recently.
Using it you can reduce PIN authentication probes from 100000000 to only 11000 making brute force attack possible and reveal password to network in about 4 hours (usually even sooner). Most AccessPoints are vulnerable thus with this attack you can brute-force almost any network around. Doesn t matter if it uses WPA/WPA2 nor which method PSK/Radius. It only needs to be WPS enabled and most of APs are. I ve just packaged reaver-wps tool for Debian (I m also an author of its ArchLinux PKGBUILD) and it s now waiting in new queue. If you want to try it before it enters unstable I put it also on my people.debian.org account.
After installing it all you have to do is enable monitor mode in your wifi card (you need aircrack-ng package for that):
airmon-ng start wlan0
Then start attack:
reaver -i mon0 -b xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx -vv
Of course name of interfaces may differ as their depend on your wifi driver. After -b switch you have to enter BSSID of the target AP. That s all. Happy ha^Wcracking ;) I wonder if it really enter Debian archive, cause it s shipped with several libraries already included in Debian. Mainly Linux Wireless Extensions library, and some part of wpa-supplicant package (this are at least slightly modified). In fact there are chances that reaver will became the part of the aircrack-ng suite (they discuss it already), but that won t happen soon, so it still would be great to have this package in Debian.

I sponsored the upload of new version of radiotray package.

Christian Perrier: Right wing or not?

Bartosz, it's interesting to see that "right wing" seems to have different definitions for both of us, and probably in both our countries...:-) So far, the definition of M. Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz party "Law and Justice" (I think this is the right translation of PiS...in French, we use "Droit et Justice") would classify it as "conservative" for me...and thus eligible for being called "right wing". Anyway, we both agree that political orientations in Poland really suck. I really would have hated seeing someone like Roman Giertych, head of the "Polish Families League", ultra-catholic party, be in some change in my country (we have a very similar political man named "Philippe de Villiers", here). Worse is the nomination of Andrzej Lepper who probably represents the most hideous aspects of populism. I think that such step is more or less impossible to avoid, unfortunately. And I stay confident that your country, as well as all recent EU members from Central Europe, will soon overcome this. Don't emigrate: you have to change your country from the inside...:)

Bartosz Feński: do engineers test their ideas?

I doubt it... how often did you swear at guys that designed something?
Sometime I think that the guy that invented something extremely stupid and uncomfortable should be convicted to use it during rest of his life.
How long did he think before he figured out that the best place for headphones jack in my laptop would be front side of it? Now plugging there anything is very, very, very awkward and I really don't like wires around my navel using laptop while laying in bed.
Well... maybe it's some marketing hack, cause now I wonder about buying usb/pcmcia sound card ;)
